The Broadband Challenge

Sunday, April 1st, 2018

Michigan’s lack of reputable broadband in rural areas means more than slow-loading movies on Hulu or Netflix.¬†Even 20 miles northwest of Ann Arbor, you can feel the lack of broadband and even access to satellite internet access or pricey cell plans is not efficient.

Students without broadband access can trail in academic achievement, miss out on opportunities to learn technical skills, but even more so, they cannot spend the time tinkering, exploring, or practicing basic skills like typing, writing emails, researching, or coding.

We have had a lot of students in our program who are teachers in rural areas and some of their research has direct connections to this lack of access. There is a lot of work to be done to ensure that our teachers can use technology effectively.
