Miss Representation

By: Michelle Carter

“Miss Representation” is a documentary about how women are misrepresented in media and how that affects their overall ability to become leaders in today’s society. There have always been a sad number of women represented in politics because it is not the “norm”. Why are women looked down upon for doing something they may be passionate about?  If people are educated correctly they should be able to do whatever makes them happy including women. Eastern Michigan University’s Greek Life through College Panhellenic Council and National Panhellenic Council are putting on a screening of “Miss Representation” on Saturday, December 8th at 2pm in the Student Center Ballroom. The viewing will be open to the public and after watching the film there will be small group discussion and a panel of students and faculty. This will hopefully help make a difference in the equal rights of women around the world. Come out on Saturday and watch this amazing documentary.

Pure EMU!

This summer, two guys set out to film a new Pure Michigan commercial which featured 50 cities all over Michigan. This commercial was filmed in one week’s time, which is pretty incredible for being all over Michigan!

One of the cities that was featured in this video was Ypsilanti, home to EMU. Eastern students and faculty were given the opportunity to participate in this commercial and of course I had to take up this opportunity. It was in the middle of a Wednesday and took about three hours to practice, shoot and perfect the five seconds we are featured.

The shooting took place in the middle of the street right by the water tower. There was a dancing Elvis, a giant rubber duck, people in Greek togas and even Swoop! To the song of “Good Time” by Owl City and Carly Rae Jepson, the hundreds of people that showed up danced and sang to make their star debut right then and there.

The video made its appearance on Fox news in the middle of September and will hopefully be used for many stations on TV. Even though you cannot see me, I know and you know I am in the video!

Check out why Michigan is so great and also why EMU is even more amazing.

Why Join the Honors College?

By: Michelle Carter

As a tour guide, I always get the question: “Why join the Honors College? What can it offer?”

Well those are great questions! I have been a part of the honors college since coming to Eastern. In order to get in from high school, you need a 3.5 GPA and 25 on the ACT. There are about 300 students admitted to the Honors College each year and there are many perks that come with it:

  1. Smaller Class Size: Honors classes cap at 20 students. This means you get a more enriching experience in the classroom and you have a better chance of getting to know other students and professors in the Honors classes.
  2. Prior Registration: Students in the Honors College get to register with the seniors so they get the first pick of classes.
  3. Individualized Honors Advising: There are many Honors advisors that can help students figure out Honors classes to take and what they need in order to graduate with the different types of Honors.
  4. Downing Hall Residential Living: Students that are in the Honors College get the option to live on campus in Downing Hall. This is a great experience and allows Honors students to interact outside of classroom life.
  5. Scholarship opportunities: As a senior in high school, you can compete in the Presidential Scholarship Competition that gives many students a full ride to EMU. Even if you do not receive the full ride you will get a scholarship of about $4,500 every year.
  6. Diverse Community: The Honors community may be small but it is growing and very diverse. There are students from all over the place and all different kinds of majors in the Honors College so you can always find someone that is similar to you.

If this does not convince you to be in the Honors College then I’m not sure what will. Honors College looks great on a resume and there are different ways to graduate with Honors. Get involved and go Honors!

Pinning Craze!

By: Michelle Carter

So this past year, Pinterest has swept the nation.

Pinning has become one of the biggest pastimes and is becoming a big deal like Twitter and Facebook. People are getting ideas for future homes, design-it-yourself crafts, weddings, inspiring quotes and cool cars.

Here at Eastern, residents halls are being decorated with the newest Pinterest crafts and RAs are getting ideas for cool programs they can do with their residents.

The key to Pinterest is organization. Make sure your boards are organized with specific names so if you need to find something crafty, you can easily find it under your crafts board! Another key to Pinterest is you need to have motivation to actually do the things you pin. So if you are pinning a painted canvas then you should actually do it because first, it will make you feel good because you are artistic and second, it will look awesome on your wall in the residence hall!

Pinterest has been a great thing and it allows not-so-crafty people to become crafty. If you have not been invited to join Pinterest then you should probably get that invitation soon!

Happy pinning!

EMU To Do!

By: Michelle Carter

As Fusion First Four quickly approaches, there are a few must things you need to do when you get to Eastern in the first few weeks.

  1. Go to everyday of First Four Orientation: If you go to each day, then you are likely to adjust better to going to college. There are a lot of fun activities planned and getting out there will allow you to stay active in the first four days.
  2. Meijer Mania: Need some last minute school supplies or food? This is a great event that happens every year. Meijer Mania is a huge event where students from Eastern can get shuttled to the Meijer on Carpenter Road and get discounted items along with some free stuff! (Now who doesn’t love free stuff?!)
  3. Visit Downtown/Depot Town: Downtown Ypsi and Depot Town have great places to eat and shop. Some great ones include Aubrees (pizza and calzones), Sidetracks (burgers and fried pickles), Beezys (hipster breakfast) and the Rocket (novelty shop).
  4. Find your way around campus: If you know where all of your classes are before they start, you will not be that freshman wandering around like a lost puppy. Also you could be one to show others that are lost where their classes are!
  5. Make some friends: The adjustment to college will be a lot easier if you have some friends to share the experience with, this means getting out of your room and being open to other people and new things.

If you do these five things then you will be likely to succeed in your first few days of class! Good luck and go Eagles!

Eastern Excursions!

By: Michelle Carter

Have you ever wanted to go see a Musical in Detroit? Or go to Halloweekends at Cedar Point? Well Eastern Excursions are your key to getting there!

Every school year, Campus Life does fun trips to different places around the Michigan and Ohio area. The neat thing about the excursions is that they are reduced prices for EMU students. For example, going to Halloweekends for a normal public admission would cost about $60, where for EMU students it’s only $35! WOW!

Also there is a bus to get there and back provided for students. They also do trips to various places in Detroit, including trips to see Musicals at the Detroit Opera House and some others too.

I got to see Les Miserable when I was a freshman (which happens to be my favorite musical ever)! I also went on an Eastern Excursion to the Detroit Institute of Art and Holocaust Museums. We got transported there and back, with a lunch and it was only a whopping $10!

That is a great deal if I do say so myself. On top of the fact that it was a blast going to these two museums, it was also very educational. I learned a lot about a few different cultures around the world and art pieces. I hope that this blog convinces you to go to some Eastern Excursions in your time here at EMU!

Orientation Rocks!

By: Michelle Carter

First Four is just like it sounds, the first four days of school. This is a great opportunity for freshmen and transfers to begin meeting students here at EMU. Each day has different activities and things to do for the new students. Some of the great things that you cannot miss during orientation include:

  1. Free Meals! Every day there is breakfast, lunch and dinner for students. Some of the favorites include Fajita Fest and Ypsilanti food.
  2. Close Up! This is a theater group that does a performance on what to expect for students.
  3. Fajita Fest! This is where you can find out about every single club and organization that is on EMU’s campus and sign up for as many as you would like.
  4. Play fair! This is crazy, fun and exciting icebreakers that allow you to meet so many new people.
  5. Campus Tour! Your NSOA leader will follow you through campus to help you find your classes.

These are just a few of the great things that come with the wonderful First Four orientation. If you miss out on this great experience, then you will probably be lost, have a small amount of friends and not be in love with the amazing EMU.

So, come have fun and be crazy.

Dreams To Be A Teacher…

By: Michelle Carter

Ever since I was in first grade, I have wanted to be an elementary school teacher. I have volunteered, worked and taught children for the past 6 years working towards the day that I have my own classroom.

From volunteering three times a week in a first grade classroom to teaching swim lessons every week, I have been in the preparation of becoming a successful teacher. Then I came to EMU, the school founded in 1849 to educate teachers.

This is the first school for this so why wouldn’t I go here? I have never been so happy with my decision to come to a university. I have had so many amazing classes that I know will help me be a better teacher. The thing with the classes that I take is they are for elementary teachers, they will give me lessons and knowledge that I can apply to the classroom.

There are organizations that students can get involved in that are education-related. Make sure that when you are picking your classes you talk to an adviser because they can help you figure out what classes to take and figure out your schedule for your time here at EMU. I hope that one day when I am in my classroom I get the opportunity to have students from Eastern because I know they will have a passion for teaching as much as I do. I will hopefully be finding a job in the next 2 years and changing lives the way that my elementary teachers did years ago.

Rollerblading: Better Than Running

By: Michelle Carter

Yes it is true: Rollerblading is making its way back to being cool!

For the past few years, rollerblading has made its comeback. It is not only fun but it is also a great workout! Here are a few great things about rollerblading:

1. Rollerblading uses a lot of the larger muscles of the lower body making it an amazing workout.

2. It helps with balance! Rollerblading require good balance which also works your core muscles to establish a center of gravity.

3. It is a low-impact activity so your bones, joints and muscles are at ease compared to running.

4. Skating is a great excuse to go outside and enjoy the fresh air.

5. While skating, you can go for miles without stopping and running out of breath, unlike the ever-so-unfriendly sport of running.

Although EMU is very hilly there are ways around the hills to make a great rollerblading excursion. If you are on the academic building side of campus in order to avoid the dangerous and dreadful hill by Porter take the trailer over by Pierce and Roosevelt. It is downhill but it does not go straight down like the hill by Porter. Also if you want a really smooth flat path then take the path to the Convocation Center- it is almost a mile (if not longer) and it is a great path.
