Snow is in season

By: Jesica Rubio

The snow is starting to fall and with that being said this means the roads will be getting worse. Yes, I said it. The roads will progressively be getting worse and the snow continues to fall. I seem to notice that every year when the roads start to get slippery and snow covered, the residents of this fine state forget how to drive.

Here is the deal, every year it snows here in Michigan. So I am here to help provide a few tips that may be helpful to those who are not huge fans of the winter season.

 First of all, check the quality of your tires. If you’re able to get new ones, or better winter ones, I recommend you do so. This can make a world of difference.

 Secondly, make sure that your car is cleaned off and defrosted. Take the extra time to make sure that you’re able to see clearly.

 Third and I cannot stress this point enough; make sure you’re driving to the conditions of the road not the posted speed limits. Give yourself plenty of extra time to get where you need to be going.

 Fourth, when it comes to braking, give yourself plenty of room to stop. Don’t mash on your brakes, this will only make you slide.

 Lastly, my final tip would be in regards to someone who gets stuck. Remain calm, don’t stress out and spin your wheels (this will only dig you deeper). Call someone to help you.

Hopefully you find these few small tips beneficial. Make sure you have plenty of time and enjoy the winter season.

Drive safe and be careful out there.

5 Uses for the Phone Booth

By: Jessica, Joy, and Caitlin

Have you ever walked past the mysterious new red phone booth and wondered “what the heck is that for?!”. The true purpose is still a little fuzzy, being as it doesn’t have a phone inside of it, but we have comprised a list of 5 things we believe to be the purpose of our campus’ newest decoration.

1. A quiet place to talk on your cell phone, because it doesn’t have a phone

2. Gymnastics Practice

3. It’s great for hide and seek :)

4. It’s the perfect place for a quick nap..zZzZ

5. Perfect hide-out from squirrels

What do you think the phone booth is used for?

No Comprendo Math

By: Jesica Rubio

MATH…….. to some people, like myself, it’s considered a foreign language. It’s a
constant struggle to understand what is being said. And since when did math include more
letters, than numbers?! Luckily, there is a free resource on campus that you can use:

My favorite on campus resource is the EMU Math Tutoring Center in room 411 Pray-
Harrold. Tutors are available to help with courses from Math 097-120 and other upper level math courses. Not only can you receive help with specific homework problems, theories, and concepts, but also obtain help with the math placement exam and standardized tests – like the GRE or GMAT! Since the tutoring center is drop-in, I appreciate the informal, laid back approach.

Don’t have an ultra-fancy calculator to plug functions into? No problem-o! The
math lab has calculators and even textbooks for students to check out for free. The process is as easy as just giving them a million dollars (just kidding, you can give your license, ID, keys, phone, etc.)! Also, the lab offers computer access for students who have online homework assignments.

I love going into the math lab to get help on calculus problems. Not only can I get help
with math problems, but there are some tutors that can help with some general physics. The Tutoring Center’s hours are long and flexible, allowing most students to drop-in for help. Best Places to Study on Campus

By: Jesica Rubio

One thing every college student has in common with their peer….. they all want to graduate (hopefully, with a strong academic performance). As I’m heading deeper and deeper into my major, the amount of hours I dedicate to studying or doing assignments has grown exponentially. This past semester, I have selected some locations that I’ve found to be comfortable:

Student Center- I find myself going to the 3rd floor of the Student Center whenever I’d want a little bit of everything at my fingertips. The Student Center has the computer lab, a food court, Service EMU, the Bookstore, and most importantly….. Starbucks! I’d recommend heading to the StuCen if you have other errands to run in the midst of studying.

Halle Library- My go to study spot is a cubicle in the far end of the 3rd floor. In my mind, the more secluded, the better. Here, I’m able to isolate myself and focus on my assignment. The ground floor computer lab in Halle is open 24/7! Also, the Paradox café on ground floor accepts meal plans. What’s studying without food?

Science Complex- This has to be the place where I spend most of my time. When in doubt, look for me here. There are two study rooms on the 1st floor of Mark Jefferson. An Eagle Café is conveniently placed in the middle of the room. On the second floor, the Chemistry department offers free chemistry tutoring! As a biology major, it is really convenient to go up a flight of stairs and ask my professors questions during their office hours.

University Park- Awesome weather and a scenic view makes for a relaxing study session. Since I obviously love eating while studying, fix yourself a picnic. Be careful though, the geese are crazy!

A suggestion I would give students is to hang out and study in the building their major is located in. Who knows? The students next to you could be studying the same subject. Can anybody say, Study Buddies!!!

Bob Evans Knows How to Start the Day!

By: Jesica Rubio

Nothing tastes more amazing than a cheesy, greasy, heaven-filled English muffin sandwich. Morning, afternoon or evening, nothing satisfies my tummy like a Bob Evans sandwich. This is my go-to breakfast meal. I would consider this to be a weekly ritual before I head to work. The Lobby Shop in the Student Center offers the tasty treat as well as other variations of sandwiches.

The sandwiches range from $2.89 to $3.99 depending on the size and flavors. At the Lobby Shop, your meal plan can go towards purchasing a sandwich, a beverage or any other snack. My personal favorite? An English muffin with sausage, cheese and egg.

My arteries may get clogged up, but the sandwich is well worth it. So if you’re ever walking around and feel your stomach growl, head over to the Lobby Shop and pick up a breakfast snack.
